Inside the Carrera GT & 918 Spyder Owner’s Drive: A Porsche Experience Like No Other

Each year, a small, elite group of Porsche’s most dedicated enthusiasts come together for what might be the most exclusive drive the marque offers: the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder Owner’s Drive. This isn’t your average car meet or road trip - this is a celebration of Porsche’s most iconic halo cars, set against the stunning backdrop of the Dolomites. The event is not advertised. You don’t buy your way in. You’re invited.
Organised officially by Porsche AG through the Porsche Zentrum Stuttgart’s Carrera GT/918 Spyder division, the drive is designed for owners who are deeply connected to the spirit and story of these machines. In 2024, about 30 cars participated - split evenly between the two halo models. Among them was the only Fayence Yellow 2004 Porsche Carrera GT in attendance, brought by Auto Icons, alongside the 2004 Porsche Carrera GT (Seal Grey). As expected, the yellow car stole the spotlight on camera.

The journey began in Stuttgart, the birthplace of Porsche, before heading south through Germany into the Italian Alps. Over three days, the group tackled a thrilling route that wound through the Dolomites, passing between Bolzano and Cortina d'Ampezzo. The drive offered hours of twisty mountain roads, steep elevation changes, and echoing tunnels that amplified the sounds of Porsche’s engineering masterpieces.

“This year’s drive felt extra meaningful,” said one of the Auto Icons clients. “Many of us hadn’t been able to take out our Carrera GTs for over a year because of the global recall. To finally be back behind the wheel, especially surrounded by friends we made during the 2023 event, was just pure joy.”
And that’s the magic of this drive - it’s not just about the cars. It’s about what they bring together.
Every morning began with a briefing from the Porsche team. Safety, conditions, and route overviews were shared before the group set off in convoy, led by a brand-new 992 GT3 RS driven by a Porsche instructor and racing driver. Colin Chow, founder of Auto Icons, had the rare opportunity to ride with the leader.
"Just seeing all the Carrera GTs and 918s in the mirrors, one after another, hunting down the GT3 RS… it was surreal,” he recalled.
Weather conditions were far from perfect - frequent rain made for tricky handling - but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the drivers. Many expressed confidence in their cars despite the conditions, embracing the challenge with excitement. After all, the Carrera GT is known for its raw, mechanical driving feel. In some ways, it was the perfect environment to reconnect with what made the car so legendary in the first place.

Evenings were equally special. Guests were treated to five-star accommodations in the Alps, featuring regional cuisine made from local ingredients. The dining experience wasn't just about the food - it was about the company. The camaraderie was palpable.

“There was no ego, no competition,” said Colin. “Everyone was there to enjoy their cars and spend time with like-minded individuals. You had hotel owners, entrepreneurs, tech founders - people from all walks of life who were just passionate about Porsche.”
One of the most unforgettable highlights of the event was the presence of rally legend Walter Röhrl. The group had the chance to not only meet the motorsport icon but to share drinks, hear stories, and even exchange contact information.

“It was a very personal experience,” Colin added. “Having Walter there made the event feel even more special.”
Behind the scenes, Porsche’s team ensured everything ran smoothly. A full mechanical support crew was on standby, and most vehicles were already based in Europe, making logistics relatively seamless. That said, the reach of this event is truly global - owners from Hong Kong, the USA, and Eastern Europe all came together, united by a shared love for the marque’s finest engineering achievements.
The media presence was low-key but professional. Porsche brought in a dedicated media team to capture every moment - from the roaring echoes of the naturally aspirated V10s bouncing off cliff faces, to the serene beauty of a Porsche convoy cutting through mountain passes.

And yes, plans are already underway for the next drive in July, with promises of clearer skies and another unforgettable journey. For those dreaming of being part of this experience, the entry point is clear.
“Buy a Carrera GT from us,” Colin smiled. “That’s your ticket into this world.”
Because in the world of Porsche, few things are more sacred than the Carrera GT. And few experiences compare to driving it through the Alps with the people who understand it best.
