1998 Porsche 911 Speedster by MLR

The 993 Speedster is one of Porsche’s most elusive “what if” stories. Never officially produced for the public, it left a gap in the 911 lineage that only a handful of specialists have ever attempted to fill.

This example is one of a very limited number of MLR-built 993 Speedsters, a bespoke conversion carried out using genuine Porsche Speedster components. Built at a time when these parts were still available, it represents a level of authenticity that would be virtually impossible to replicate today, with many of the original components now long discontinued.

More than just a cosmetic conversion, MLR’s approach was deeply engineering-led. Each car was stripped down to its shell, with additional spot welding and chassis reinforcement carried out to increase rigidity, allowing the car to retain the structural integrity and driving feel closer to that of a coupe. This is what defines the MLR builds. Not just how they look, but how they drive.

Based on a 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera 2S Cabriolet, this example was originally delivered new to Los Angeles and today shows just 42,000 miles, making it a particularly low mileage and well-preserved car. It retains the desirable widebody stance of the 993 Turbo, paired with rear-wheel drive and the naturally aspirated flat-six.

Finished in Arena Red Metallic, it is further distinguished by a unique body-colour painted dashboard, a detail that has made the car especially well received within enthusiast circles.

Under long-term ownership since 1999, this car has been carefully developed into a properly sorted driver’s example. The chassis features KW Variant 3 coilovers, factory Turbo M030 anti-roll bars, C4 drop links and a rare RSR strut tower brace, delivering a sharper and more composed driving experience while preserving the analogue character of the 993.

Mechanically, the car has seen significant investment. A top-end rebuild by 9M included hardened valve guides and a full clean of the SAI system, addressing known 993 concerns, with the engine inspected thoroughly during the process. Paired with Fister Stage 1 mufflers, a Golden Rod and short shift kit, the car offers a more immediate and engaging drive. As described by its owner, it is a true “runner”, with strong performance and a drivetrain that feels cohesive through the gears.

Thoughtful usability upgrades such as a Blaupunkt CDR220 with Bluetooth, upgraded audio system and subtle interior enhancements ensure the car can be enjoyed regularly, while remaining true to its period-correct feel. It is complete with factory tools, spare, air pump and turbo jack, and supported by documented service history.

With the 993 Speedster never officially produced, and with the original components required to build one no longer available, this stands as a rare opportunity to acquire a faithful and highly resolved interpretation of a car Porsche never made.
