Few competition cars have left a legacy quite like the Lancia Delta. Between 1987 and 1992, the four-wheel-drive Delta lineage amassed 46 World Rally Championship victories and an unprecedented six consecutive Manufacturers’ titles, cementing its place as the most successful model dynasty in WRC history.
And at the heart of that story was the Delta HF Integrale 16V.
Introduced in 1989 as the latest evolution of Lancia’s Group A programme, the Integrale 16V was developed as both a formidable road car and the production basis for Lancia’s competition machines. Beneath its unmistakably boxy silhouette sat a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a new 16-valve cylinder head, producing approximately 200 bhp in road-going form and sending its power through a permanent four-wheel-drive system.
It was a deceptively simple formula. Take a practical five-door Italian hatchback, widen the arches, add turbocharged power and sophisticated four-wheel drive, then continuously refine it through the demands of international rallying. The result became one of the defining performance cars of its generation.
This particular 1990 Delta HF Integrale 16V comes to us from South Africa and presents as a remarkably well-preserved example. Details such as the rear door panels, which remain wrapped in their protective plastic, and the pristine condition of the rear seats offer a glimpse into how carefully the car has been kept over the years.
More importantly, considerable attention has recently been given to its mechanical condition. The car has undergone a major service, including the replacement of numerous gaskets, while all four shock absorbers have also been replaced, preparing it for its next custodian to enjoy.
Today, the appeal of the Integrale extends far beyond its formidable competition record. Its squared-off Giugiaro-designed silhouette, swollen wheel arches and purposeful stance have become unmistakable symbols of rallying’s Group A era. Yet underneath all of that history remains a compact, engaging and wonderfully characterful road car.
For Singapore enthusiasts, this example presents an increasingly rare opportunity to experience that history on the road. This 1990 Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16V is now available for sale and eligible for registration under Singapore’s Classic Vehicle Scheme.
