This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 230CE Coupe is a long-term enthusiast-owned example finished in black over a reupholstered cream leather interior, retaining its original black plate registration and driven regularly over the past 21 years.
Benefitting from a comprehensive restoration completed in 2024, the car features a rebuilt engine, refreshed suspension and bushings, upgraded cooling and air-conditioning systems, period-style Lorinser wheels and a fully restored interior, all while preserving the timeless character that defines the W123 Coupe.
Introduced during a period when Mercedes-Benz engineering philosophy was centred around durability, refinement and mechanical integrity above all else, the W123 platform would go on to become one of the most respected and over-engineered production cars of its era.
Built at a time when Mercedes-Benz engineers were famously given almost unrestricted freedom in development, the W123 earned a reputation globally for reliability, longevity and understated elegance. Taxi fleets across Europe and the Middle East would routinely cover hundreds of thousands of kilometres, while the pillarless C123 Coupe variant introduced a more elegant and personal interpretation of the platform without compromising the solid engineering beneath.
The car was acquired in 2005 from a lady owner who had reportedly owned it for only a month before moving on to a Mercedes-Benz 280S. Since then, it has remained in the hands of the same owner, serving as a daily-driven classic while gradually evolving through years of thoughtful maintenance and tasteful modifications intended to preserve usability without losing the original spirit of the car.
Power comes from a 2.3-litre M102 inline-four paired with an automatic transmission. Over the course of ownership, the cooling system was comprehensively upgraded with a rebuilt radiator system and upgraded air-conditioning setup, addressing the known tendency for W123s to struggle in tropical climates. Fueling components including the high-pressure fuel pump, return hoses and feedback hoses were also replaced to improve drivability, idle quality and responsiveness.
In 2024, the car underwent an extensive refurbishment programme after plans were initially made to keep it indefinitely. The exterior was stripped back for rust rectification works before receiving a full repaint in black, while the engine was rebuilt and suspension components refreshed with replacement rubber bushings throughout. Restoration works were carried out over approximately six months between specialist workshops in Kuala Lumpur selected through enthusiast recommendations.
The suspension setup was complemented with lowered springs and shocks alongside period-style 16-inch Lorinser wheels, wider tyres and rear spacers, giving the coupe a more purposeful stance while remaining sympathetic to the original design language. One of the defining features of the C123 chassis remains its elegant pillarless silhouette, creating a distinctive open-air profile when all windows are lowered.
Inside, the cabin was retrimmed with cream leather upholstery and refreshed carpets, while retaining much of the W123 Coupe’s classic character. Additional features include a Continental Bluetooth-enabled head unit, Infinity speakers and a Kenwood subwoofer integrated subtly into the cabin. The upholstery work was reportedly hand-sewn by a specialist upholsterer during the refurbishment process.
Maintenance throughout ownership was entrusted to the same Mercedes-Benz specialist mechanic for over two decades, resulting in a level of familiarity and continuity rarely seen with classic cars today. The sale comes only as a result of relocation from Singapore, making this a reluctant parting after more than 21 years of ownership.
Representing one of the final generations of traditionally engineered Mercedes-Benz models, this W123 Coupe is presented as a long-term enthusiast-owned and comprehensively refurbished example intended for continued use and enjoyment. As the owner himself puts it, “Nobody makes cars like this anymore.”
