Now available through Auto Icons, this 1970 Nissan Fairlady Z432 represents one of the most significant and sought-after variants of the original S30-generation Z.
Introduced alongside the first-generation Fairlady Z in 1969, the Z432 sat at the very top of Nissan’s domestic Z-car range. While the standard Fairlady Z was powered by Nissan’s L-series straight-six, the Z432 received the 1,989 cc S20 twin-cam inline-six shared with the PGC10 Skyline 2000GT-R.
Producing 160 PS at 7,000 rpm, the S20 gave the Z432 a very different character from the rest of the early Z range. Its name described the engine itself: four valves per cylinder, three carburettors and two overhead camshafts. 4-3-2.
Paired with a five-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential, the Z432 also received magnesium wheels as standard and was positioned as the flagship of the Fairlady Z line-up. Approximately 420 examples are understood to have been produced, all for the Japanese domestic market.
That limited production, together with the connection to Nissan’s early GT-R programme, has made the Z432 one of the most important road-going Nissans of its era.
Presented here is a 1970 Nissan Fairlady Z432 originally delivered in Japan.
Prior to 2020, the car underwent a comprehensive full-chassis restoration. The accompanying restoration photographs document the extent of the work, with the car taken down to its shell and major components removed before the body, chassis, mechanical assemblies and ancillary parts were carefully restored and reassembled.
The photographs provide a clear record of areas that would normally remain hidden once the car is complete, including the underside, inner body panels, suspension mounting points, engine bay and interior structure. Individual components were also removed and refinished before reassembly.
The result is a Z432 painted in its original Safari Gold, that received attention well beyond a cosmetic exterior restoration, with work carried out throughout the structure and mechanical components of the car.
In 2023, the car was acquired from Japan. It was subsequently imported in 2024 for a private collector and has remained in a climate-controlled environment since its arrival.
Its provenance is particularly fitting for a model that was produced exclusively for the Japanese domestic market. More than five decades after it was built, this example continues to retain the specification that made the Z432 such an important part of Nissan’s early performance history.
The combination of the lightweight S30 chassis and high-revving S20 engine remains central to the appeal of the Z432. It brought the engine associated with the earliest Skyline GT-R into one of the most recognisable Japanese sports-car designs of the period.
With approximately 420 examples produced, opportunities to acquire a Z432 remain uncommon. Examples accompanied by extensive photographic documentation of a full chassis restoration are rarer still.
